Awareness of Immigration Issues

Dates to be confirmed

Closing date:

Trainer: Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit

Aim: To raise an awareness of when there may be a potential immigration problem and know where to refer a client for help

At the end of the session, delegates will be able to:

  • Identify an individual’s immigration status from the documents they have, including the stage at which a client has reached in the asylum determination process
  • Refer to a glossary of important terms relating to immigration and asylum law
  • Offer basic advice to asylum seekers and refugees on entitlement to NASS, local authority or state benefit support
  • Be aware of the various levels of immigration advice available in Greater Manchester, and the locations of the agencies who provide it
  • Identify how immigration advice is regulated (OISC)
  • Identify what level of immigration advice a client needs – be it general help or specialist help - and refer them to an appropriate agency for assistance

Level of expertise: Introductory

We will assume no technical knowledge, although delegates will be invited at the start of the morning to say what experience they have of dealing with clients from abroad and to name a particular problem they have faced in assisting them.
