If your neighbour has accused you of being a nuisance, the first step towards resolving the problem is to talk to your neighbour to see whether you can reach a compromise. If this is not possible, or if discussions break down, it may be worthwhile arranging for a mediator to assist you in finding a solution. Manchester City Council offers a mediation service (external link) to both Council tenants and private tenants/owner occupiers (Manchester residents only).
If you don't feel that mediation will work, and you think that your neighbour's complaints are unfounded, it may be in your interests to put your case forward to your housing officer or landlord. If you have any information that can support your version of events, you may wish to present it at this point.
If your neighbour continues to make allegations of nuisance towards you, and you do not feel that the allegations are substantiated, you may need to get further advice. Find a Housing Adviser by using our Advice Agency Search, or find a solicitor through CLS Direct.
If your neighbour's complaints are justified, and you are at fault, it is advisable to take some action to remedy the problem as soon as possible. Your neighbour is entitled to contact your landlord or housing officer to request that they intervene. If they believe that you are breaking the terms of your tenancy agreement, it could result in you losing your home. Remember, even homeowners are not above the law and the Local Council can take action against those responsible for nuisance.
