Tips for young people

Moving out of home for the first time is a big step. Apart from the practicalities of finding somewhere to live, you may also need help with managing your finances and some advice about your rights in your new accommodation. Leaving home is not a decision to be rushed into and there is a risk that you may find yourself in a worse position than you were at home. If you cannot stay at home any longer, it may be worthwhile trying to stay with friends for a short time so that you can consider your options. Look at the information on Connexions website for helpful hints about moving out of home (external website).

Benefits

People under the age of 25 are at a disadvantage when looking for housing. There are different rules for claiming housing benefit, and you will generally receive less money in benefits than those over 25. If you are age under 18, you will have difficulty in qualifying for benefits to help you with your living expenses. Shelter has information about housing benefit for young people and students (external website).

Care leavers
If you left care after October 2001, and you are aged under 21, or 24 if in full time education, you will be entitled to assistance with your housing from Social Services. Shelter has information about support for care leavers (external website).
