Grants, adaptations, equipments and home improvements

For disabled people: Disabled Facilities Grant

If you or someone in your household is disabled you might be able to get a Disabled Facilities Grant. This grant is available from your Local Authority and is there to help you pay for adaptations that will allow a disabled people to live independently in their home. The person applying for the grant does not have to be the disabled person. The grant is mandatory, which means that as long as you meet the criteria and apply in the correct way, the Local Authority is obliged to award you the grant.

You may find the process of applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant extremely complicated so get help from a solicitor or specialist adviser.

Homeowners in Manchester

If your home needs essential repairs or adaptations, Manchester City Council can help you by offering advice and assistance to arrange a low cost loan. The scheme targets older people on benefits but may also be able to help other people. Find out more about the Home Improvement Scheme (external website)

Further help for older people is available from Manchester Care and Repair (external website). This is a not for profit organisation that can help over 60's in North, East and Central Manchester with:

  • Home repairs
  • Small jobs around the home
  • Home safety
  • Staying independent
  • Energy efficiency

Care and Repair will also give help and advice to people under 60 who live in Gorton, Longsight and Levenshulme. Help is available regarding home repairs and home security.

Help for council tenants in Manchester

Manchester City Council can offer help to some council tenants (external website) - usually older and / or disabled people - with the following:

Help for private tenants in Manchester

Manchester Care and Repair offers a support service to private tenants aged over 60 living in North, East and Central Manchester and to private tenants aged under 60 living in Gorton, Levenshulme and Longsight.
