Do You Find It Difficult to Afford Expensive Items for Your Home?
You may find it difficult to afford furniture or an electrical appliance. If so, you might consider buying a second-hand item. Some organisations will sell you good-quality second hand items cheaply. Contact Age Concern for advice.
Safety
If you do consider buying a second-hand item, be careful. Make sure it is of good quality, and not dangerous. Upholstered furniture should conform to fire safety regulations. If it does, there will be a label attached to it headed "Carelessness Causes Fire," which gives details of the maker, when the item was made, and what it is made of. Make sure electrical goods are safe. You might want to have them checked by an electrician.
Cookers
New cookers are expensive and you may decide to buy a second- hand one. Make sure that the cooker has been checked for safety, and that it is properly installed by qualified people. Some organisations may be able to sell you a second-hand cooker cheaply, particularly if you are on a low income. Contact Age Concern.
Be careful if you buy a cooker from a small advert in a local paper like Loot. Some traders sell cookers through these papers but pretend they are an individual selling their own cooker rather than a business. They do this because you have fewer rights if you buy goods from an individual. If you think this has happened to you contact Consumer Advice. If you are having problems with a cooker you have bought, contact Consumer Advice.
