Consumer Problem? What to do...
If you have a complaint about goods or services stop using the item and contact the shop or trader straight away. If the problem is not sorted out:
- Put your complaint in writing to the trader.
- Ask for a reply within a set time e.g. 14 days.
- Keep a copy of your letter and send it by recorded or special delivery.
If that doesn't work, or if you need advice about your consumer rights, contact one of the agencies in the Consumer Support Network for help.
Tips to avoid problems with services
- Avoid traders who come to your home selling anything.
- Always use a qualified or reputable trader.
- Get written quotations, not estimates. Ask around a few traders to get an idea of the average price.
- If a timescale is agreed or is important to you, get it confirmed in writing beforehand.
- Check the quality of the work before you sign or pay for it.
Problems with Credit Agreements
Signed a Credit Agreement and Want to Change Your Mind?
If you have signed an agreement to buy goods on credit and you have done this away from the premises of the company concerned, there is a "cooling off period" in which you have the right to cancel the agreement. This would apply to you if you signed an agreement with a door-to-door salesman in your home. You should receive a copy of the agreement you have signed within seven days of signing the original. You have a further five days after you receive this copy to cancel the agreement. The copy should tell you what your rights are.
Signed a Credit Agreement Because You Were Put Under Pressure?
If you signed an agreement because you were put under pressure to do so, you have the right to cancel it.
