Part-time or full-time?
Financial help is available for people doing part-time degree courses. It won't affect your benefits. Get advice on studying full-time or part-time before you decide what's best for you.
Residence Rules
Check that you have lived in Great Britain long enough to qualify for:
- help with fees,
- help from the Access and Hardship Funds,
- Student Loans,
- grants available for disabled students, and
- grants for students with dependants.
There are special rules for:
- refugees,
- asylum seekers with exceptional leave, discretionary leave or humanitarian protection, and
- people who are nationals of countries in the European Union or European Economic Area.
Fees
Part-time Courses
You may be able to get a grant to cover all or part of the fees. It depends on your income. Apply to the education department of your local council.
Full-time - degree courses
Some students may have to pay up to £1,175 (2005/2006 academic year) towards course fees. The fee you pay depends on your income or your spouse's income. Your parents' income will be taken into account if you don't have 'independent student status', for example: you are under 25 and are unmarried and have not been supporting yourself for at least three years.
Update - From September 2006, universities and colleges will be able to charge new students up to £3,000 a year for their courses. You will not be expected to contribute to your fees while studying, but can take out a student loan. You start repaying the loan after finishing your studies and earning more than £15,000 a year. Full-time - NHS Courses
Your fees are covered by the NHS. Check that you have lived in Great Britain long enough to qualify for help with fees. Students from low income families will receive extra help which they can use to pay their fees. This help will come in the form of a new Maintenance Grant and Bursaries from their university or college.
