Maternity Allowance is a benefit you may be able to claim if you stop working because you are going to have a baby. Entitlement depends on your recent earnings. It is paid whether or not you return to work after the birth of your baby.
Some women may be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay instead of Maternity Allowance. This depends on how long you have been working. You should check first to see whether you can claim Statutory Maternity Pay as it may mean you get more money.
Claim Maternity Allowance if you are not entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay because you are self-employed, recently employed, changed jobs during your pregnancy or if you do not meet the earnings rules.
