Key benefits and tax credits for families with children

Below is a list and brief explanation of the main benefits and tax credits available. Follow the links to get more detailed information:

Child Benefit
A benefit available for all children under age 16, or under age 20 if still in full-time education. It is also available for a short period after the child has left school or college.

Child Tax Credit
If you are a parent you may be able to claim Child Tax Credit as long as your child is living with you. You may be entitled whether or not you are in work.

Child Trust Fund
This is a new long-term savings boost for young children.

Council Tax Benefit and Council Tax discounts or reductions
Help for you to pay your council tax.

Education Benefits
Help with school clothing costs, minor awards and free school meals.

Education Maintenance Allowance
Cash help for 16-19 year olds staying on at school or college.

Health Benefits
Help with costs of prescriptions, dental treatment, sight tests, glasses, fares to hospital and milk and vitamins.

Housing Benefit
Help for you to pay your rent.

Income Support
A benefit available for families or lone parents who do not have to be available for work.

Jobseeker's Allowance
A benefit you can claim if you or you partner are unemployed.

Social Fund
You can apply to the Social Fund for grants or loans for one-off costs such as for furniture, removal costs or funeral expenses. You usually have to be getting certain benefits or tax credits to be eligible but not always . . .

Working Tax Credit
Extra cash available for working people on low or modest incomes. Can include help with childcare costs.

Guardian's Allowance
A benefit if you are looking after someone else's child(ren) and both parents have died, or one has died and the other is missing or in prison.
