Free School Meals
These are available if you or your partner get:
- Income Support, or
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or
- Child Tax Credit, if your income is below a certain level, and you meet some other rules, or
- Support from the National Asylum Support Service or the local authority as an asylum seeker.
Secondary School Clothing Grants
These grants are to help Manchester residents with the cost of items of school clothing for children at secondary school. They are available for children in year 7, paying £80 and for children in year 10, paying £41. You are entitled to a grant if you or your partner get:
- Income Support, or
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or
- The ‘Guarantee Credit’ part of Pension Credit, or
- Child Tax Credit at the maximum rate and you are not getting Working Tax Credit or an amount for childcare paid with your Child Tax Credit, or
- Support from the National Asylum Support Service or the local authority as an asylum seeker.
Update – The rules for Secondary School Clothing Grants in Manchester changed in September 2005 and September 2006.
Bus Passes for School Pupils
Pupils who live and go to school in Manchester can get a school travel pass, if travelling three miles or more to a secondary school, or two miles or more to a primary school, by the shortest safe route. Contact the admissions team in the Education Department on 234 7150.
Pupils with special educational needs can also get a bus pass. Contact the special educational needs casework team on 234 7165 for details.
Transport from home to school or college
To arrange transport for pupils and students with special educational needs, contact the Transport Co-ordination unit on 234 7090 (Manchester residents).
