Employment Support Allowance (ESA)

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) replaced Incapacity Benefit and Income Support for people who make a new claim for benefit from 27 October 2008 due to illness.

People aged under 25 already on incapacity benefits transfer to ESA throughout 2009, with a protected rate of benefit.  Over-25s already on incapacity benefits transfer to ESA between 2010 and 2013, with a protected rate of benefit.

When claiming ESA, new assessments focus most on what you can do to move towards work.  Free courses aim to help you manage medical conditions, such as back pain or mental health difficulties.  For brand new claimants, ESA is paid at a lower rate for the first 13 weeks, before increasing to one of two higher rates.  if you are found fit for work, you may need to switch to Jobseeker's Allowance, or appeal the decision.  Extra payments up to £40 a week for 12 months may be available if you move into work paying up to £15,000 a year.  Benefit run-ons for four weeks, tax credits and help with rent and council tax can boost incomes when working.
