Attendance Allowance

Don't forget to check all the information in this section - follow 'next' at the bottom of the page

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over 65 who need help with personal care or who need someone to look out for them to stay safe. Your income and savings are not taken into account when you apply for Attendance Allowance.

Who can claim Attendance Allowance?

You can claim Attendance Allowance if:

  • You are aged 65 years or over
  • You need care or supervision
  • You have lived in Great Britain for six months out of the last year
  • You have needed care for at least six months (unless you are terminally ill)
  • You do not have a restriction on your immigration status

What kind of care or supervision?

You should claim if you need help with practical things like looking after yourself, or getting about the home. For example: using the toilet or commode, getting in or out of bed, getting up or down the stairs, dressing or undressing, washing or bathing, eating or taking medication.

You should claim if you need someone close by to avoid any risk of falls, accidents or danger. For example: you are unsteady on your feet, prone to blackouts or dizzy spells, or you can't see or hear well.

You should claim if you need support because of mental health problems. For example: you are confused or forgetful, or you neglect yourself.

Recent court decisions may make it easier for people with sight, hearing problems or learning difficulties to get Attendance Allowance. So, any help you need because of these problems, for instance: someone to guide you when you walk outside, someone to read letters or papers to you, someone to help you communicate with others, or someone to help you to have a proper social life should now help you to qualify.
