Work, training and study

Paid Work

If you are already getting your State Retirement Pension and want to do some paid work, your earnings do not affect your pension. But earnings can affect benefits and tax credits that are based on your weekly income, so please get advice. You might be entitled to Working Tax Credit - get advice.

Voluntary work

If you do unpaid voluntary work, it does not usually affect your benefits. Payments for expenses are ignored. However, if you claim benefits because of illness or care needs and if your condition improves significantly, your entitlement to some benefits may change.

Study

If you are 60 or over, you can usually study on a full or part-time course and keep your benefits. Student income does not affect Pension Credit.

If you are claiming Attendance Allowance or Disability Living Allowance, sometimes your course may be used as evidence that you need less care. If you are claiming incapacity benefits sometimes your course may be used as evidence that you are able to work. You should get advice on how to handle this.
