Other help - alarms, support, sheltered housing

I need an alarm for emergencies

The Community Alarm Service provides a 24-hour alarm service so that old, frail or vulnerable people are able to stay in their own homes. Call the Contact Centre on 255 8250, or textphone 272 8770.

For a charge, Age Concern Aid-Call can also supply alarms for personal safety and emergencies. For more information, ring 0800 77 22 66.

Can I Apply for Sheltered Housing?

You may be interested in moving to a property where you can stay independent and active. There is a range of accommodation like this across Manchester. Find more information on Manchester City Council's website about sheltered housing, including how to register, (external website).

Support to Live Independently

There is now a scheme called Supporting People (external website), which brings together various types of support available to help you live independently if you are vulnerable. You should be able to get support that is tailor made to what you need. This could be things like:

  • Helping you to sort out bills.
  • Help to manage the things that are required of you as a tenant.
  • Getting you resettled if you're homeless.

Supporting People mainly covers support that is linked in some way to housing. It does not include personal care.

They have an on-line directory (external website) of Supported People funded, housing related, support services available in Manchester.
