Help to pay for heating

Winter Fuel Payments

Cash payments of up to £200 per household are made each year to people aged 60 or over to help with winter fuel bills. Payments are up to £300 a year per household if you are over 80. For 2006/2007, you need to be aged 60 or over between 18 and 24 September 2006 and normally live in the UK. Your income and savings don't affect the payment.

There are lower payments if you live in a care home and don't get Pension Credit. But, there is no payment if you live in a care home and get Pension Credit.

The payments are made automatically, usually in November or December, if you get a social security benefit or state pension or if you applied successfully in a previous year and there are no changes in your circumstances. Otherwise, you need to apply.

Contact the Winter Fuel Payments Helpline on 08459 15 15 15 (Textphone 0845 601 5613) if you have a query about the payments, or to claim for past years.

Cold Weather Payments

If you are 60 years or over and get Pension Credit you will qualify for an extra payment each week that the weather is very cold. This Cold Weather Payment is made for any period of 7 days when the temperature is freezing or below. This payment will be sent automatically - you do not have to claim it.
