If a relative or someone close to you dies, and you get:
AND
you are the closest living relative or person who could take responsibility for the funeral, you may get help with the cost of their funeral. If there is another relative who had a similar connection, and who is not getting a means-tested benefit they will be expected to pay for the funeral.
The payment will pay for the cost of purchasing a burial plot, the burial or cremation fee, and any associated medical expenses, up to set amounts. You must claim within 3 months of the funeral, on form SF200 from your local Jobcentre Plus, or the Pension Service. If the deceased had a funeral payment plan, the cost should be paid out of that. The funeral payment may be reclaimed by the Department of Work and Pensions from any cash available from the deceased person's estate.
